Harambee Stars striker Micheal Olunga has opened up on his initial tough transition to professional football in Sweden.

The Kenyan star left for the Scandinavia last January after a stellar season in the Kenyan Premier League.

He would initially impress during a month long trial, and then, struggle for a few months before bursting onto the scene with 12 league goals in 13 games during the second stanza of the season.

Speaking to Nairobi News, the former Gor Mahia and Tusker FC star also thanked ex-international Bonvenature Maruti for his support.

POTENTIAL MOVE

Now retired, Maruti starred for clubs in Sweden and Norway during an expansive career in Europe.

“It was really tough at the beginning. During pre-season I was on trial and kept asking myself whether I would get the contract. And then Maruti came through. He would text me almost daily and urge me to work harder while giving me tips on how I’d impress the coaches,” Olunga recalled.

“Eventually I am glad to have been considered, and things have gone well so far in the first season. I am looking forward to improving in the second season,” he said.

The Harambee Stars striker has in the recent past been linked with clubs in Spain, Turkey and Belgium, but chose not to speak on the subject.
