Italian athletics agent on doping charges bailed out

Italian athletics agent Federico Rosa has been granted bail by a Nairobi court after spending four days in custody.

Mr Rosa, who is battling doping related charges in Kenya, was dramatically arrested in Nairobi by the Anti-Narcotics Unit earlier this week.

When he appeared in court on Wednesday, the prosecution said Mr Rosa is being investigated for conspiracy to cause injury to the reputation and profession of athletes and preventing some of them from their lawful exercise of their profession by doping.

On Friday, Mr Rosa was released on a Sh300,000 bail by a Kibera court but his passport will however remain confiscated as he is expected back behind bars on July 14 when his case will be mentioned and a date of hearing determined.

DISGRACED MARATHONER

Mr Rosa is a director of athletics management firm, Rosa and Associati, a top agency that manages high profile Kenyan athletes.

Another Italian national and athletics coach Claudio Berardelli is being detained as the Anti-Narcotics Unit at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations continue with investigations.

Mr Berardelli is the former coach of disgraced three-time Boston Marathon champion Rita Jeptoo, who is currently serving a two-year ban for doping.

The development comes barely two months after President Uhuru Kenyatta signed a bill which aims to clampdown cases of doping in Kenya.
