Investigators confirm rot at Nairobi Aviation college

Investigations into the operations of Nairobi Aviation College have confirmed that it issues certificates illegally.

A Technical And Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) report released on Monday also found that diploma students were being taught by tutors with the same qualification.

The authority’s Chairman, Prof Wilson Ogola asked the college to stop issuing internal certificates.

“This is not in line with best practices,” said Prof Ogola during the release of the damning report.

“The college should stop offering these courses until such a time when they have put together a qualified team to teach them,” he added.

FRESH REGISTRATION

The investigation was conducted by a team comprising officials from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the authority following an exposé by NTV early this month that uncovered fraudulent and irregular issuance of college diplomas to students at the college.

The investigation revealed that the institution had set up the Nairobi Aviation College Examinations Board that was issuing certificates without government approval.

The chairman said other training institutions issuing internal academic certificates illegally must also stop forthwith or face the wrath of the law.

He added that the institutions are required to seek fresh registration in accordance with the TVET Act of 2013.

The report lists Kenya Institute of Management, Kenya School of Monetary Studies, College of Insurance, Kenya Police Service Colleges and Kenya Wildlife Services as the only institutions authorised to issue internal academic certificates.

The investigation by NTV and the Daily Nation had unearthed instances of bribery.

FORGED CERTIFICATES

Officials at the Nairobi Aviation College issued students who had never stepped into a classroom with forged certificates for cash.

The media reports sparked protests by the college’s students outside Nation Centre.

In defiance of set education guidelines, the college was also found to be enrolling students who were not qualified, some having been school dropouts.

“The college has been advertising courses that have not been approved, including theology.

“It must stop misleading the public by advertising courses that have not been approved by the relevant authorities,” said Prof Ogola.
