Insurance executive dies in city


One of Kenya’s leading insurance executives, Mr Abdallah Bekah Bakhit, has died.

Mr Bekah, who died on Thursday, was the Managing Director of Sedgwick Kenya Insurance Brokers limited and the chairman of the College of Insurance Management Board.

He was buried at the Kariokor Muslim Cemetery in Nairobi on Friday. There will be prayers on Saturday at his residence in Nyari Estate, Red Hill Road.

Mr Bekah was a non-executive director of  the Nation Media Group between 1995 and 2008.

During this time, he served on the editorial board committee and was also a trustee of the Nation Staff Investment Trust Fund.

A sports lover, Mr Bekah is a former chairman of Harambee Stars Management Board and was once the treasurer of Gor Mahia.

He also chaired the Kenya Golf Union, where he is remembered for, among other things, assisting many caddies to join clubs as honorary members.

“He was a prolific golfer. He assisted many of the current professional golfers start as caddies,”  NMG golf writer Larry Ngala said.

Mr Bekah held a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nairobi, a diploma in insurance from the College of Insurance, Surbiton, UK and was a Chartered Insurance Practitioner (CII).
