History maker Injera relishes moment of glory

There were emotional scenes on Saturday afternoon at London’s Twickenham Stadium as Kenya’s Collins Injera moved to the top of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series all-time try scoring chart.

France’s 29-12 victory over Kenya in the final Pool C match was overshadowed by Injera’s late try – his 231st in the series – that earned him a place in the history books.

Injera celebrated his glorious moment by sprinting to the stands, peeling off his jersey and handing it over to his elated father Dr Wilfred Emonyi, who was part of the cheering crowd.

In earlier match against Scotland, Injera scored twice to move level on 230 tries with long standing all-time top try scorer Santiago Gomez of Argentina.

SPECIAL MOMENT

“I really wanted to go for the record and now that I’ve realized it, I think its a huge thing. Its a special moment for me and it happening in Twickenham, as always Twickenham is special,” Injera said in the post match interview.

Injera also paid glowing tribute to his elder brother Humphrey Kayange, who just like in the match against Scotland handed him the final pass on the try line for the historic score.

“Just getting it from my brother, the person whom I started playing this game with is really special. He was mentoring me alot, telling what to do and what not to do,” Injera said in reference to his brother.

Kenya finished third in the pool on 5 points with one win, behind France and Scotland who tied on 8 points each. Portugal finished bottom of the pool with 3 points. Kenya now drops to the Bowl competition.
