IEBC urges Nasa to call off planned street protest

By SYLVANIA AMBANI September 25th, 2017 1 min read

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has urged Nasa to call off its planned demonstrations to push for reforms in the agency.

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, in a letter, urged the opposition coalition to instead present its grievances at a joint consultative meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

Mr Chebukati said the commission had adopted various internal measures to improve on the credibility of the repeat presidential election set for October 26.

“We write in regards to various public statements made by the leader of the Nasa coalition calling for a planned protest against the IEBC. We further write in follow up to our letter afore-referenced and dated 22nd September 2017, in which letter we set out various measures continued to be adopted by the commission to enhance the credibility and integrity of the fresh presidential elections, including addressing various concerns voiced by the Nasa Coalition,” read part of Mr Chebukati’s letter to Nasa.

“We therefore write to request that you put off the planned protests to enable the joint consultative meeting scheduled for Wednesday the 27th of September 2017, to address the concerns raised by the various stakeholders.”
