New CBK governor’s appointment to take longer

President Uhuru Kenyatta is waiting for Parliament to return from recess to forward his nominees for Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) positions.

The National Assembly is scheduled to resume its sittings on Tuesday June 9, even though there will be special sittings of the MPs on Tuesday and Wednesday to consider six pending Bills.

“Parliament is in recess, and the President will send the name of his nominee for vetting when the MPs come back,” Mr Manoah Esipisu, the President’s spokesman, told Sunday Nation.

The earliest the country could have a governor in place would then be late June or in July, four months after Prof Njuguna Ndung’u left.

ACTING CAPACITY

Since March, Dr Haron Sirima, who is among candidates to succeed Prof Ndung’u, has been serving in an acting capacity.

The special sittings will be limited to the first reading of the Companies Bill, 2015, and the Insolvency Bill, consideration of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination (Amendment) Bill, amendments by the Senate to the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Bill, 2014, and Fair Administrative Action Bill, 2015.

The MPs will also be considering the Supplementary Appropriation Bill, 2015.

The Public Service Commission submitted three names each for the positions of the CBK governor, chairperson of the Board of Directors of the CBK and deputy governor to the President on April 20.

To date, the President has not made an announcement despite the public outcry over the sliding value of the shilling partly blamed on the absence of a substantive governor.
