Here is Nairobi’s largest coffee joint

Nairobi central business district prepares to welcome the largest coffee house with a sitting capacity of 250.

Café Deli said it had invested Sh315 million four new outlets, including a high capacity joint on Kenyatta Avenue, which will all be operational by the end of 2016.

“We will spend a total of $3 million on the Kenyatta Avenue branch and three more before the end of next year. Café Deli is a spot where invigorating coffee and tasty meals are served, love stories born, gossip traded, business deals struck and relationships blossom,” said founder Obado Obadoh on Wednesday.

Café Deli received $1 million funding (about Sh105 million) from the development financier GroFin, which is backed by among other investors and financiers, the Dutch Government through the Dutch Good Growth Fund (DGGF), to open the Kenyatta Avenue branch.

Other investors include Shell Foundation, KfW Development Bank and Norfund.

During the 1st anniversary of the DGGF held in the Netherlands this past July where Mr Obadoh was invited, Dutch Foreign Minister Mirco Goudriaan termed Café Deli a classic case of successful impact investing.

The DGGF is an initiative by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs that works in collaboration with fund managers such as GroFin in bridging the financing gap for small and growing businesses.

GroFin Kenya’s Investment Executive Rishi Khubchandani said the coffee house would tailor its signature dishes with understanding of the local market as its secret to success.

“Café Deli is developing a distinctive brand identity in its unique positioning and quality offering to customers within the CBD — we are taking the right measures to cultivate a novel yet home grown Kenyan brand in the food and beverage space that will be around for decades to come,” said Mr Khubchandani.
