Former EPZ employee sentenced to six years in jail for soliciting bribe


A former procurement officer at the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Athi River Machakos County has been sentenced to six years in jail or an alternative fine of Sh.1.5 million after being found guilty of soliciting for a bribe.

The convict, Davis Chele Edewa, was charged with demanding a Sh1.6 million bribe in August 2016 in order to influence the award of a tender to a contractor.

Hezbon Ngugi Kamande reported the matter to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) who laid a trap for the suspect.

The suspect was arrested at a hotel in Kitengela where he was expecting to meet up with the contractor hoping to receive the alleged bribe.

BRIBERY SUSPECT

He was charged with the offences of soliciting and receiving a benefit contrary to the law.

The accused was convicted and sentenced by Kajiado Chief Magistrate Susan Shitumb.

Meanwhile, another bribery suspect has been fined Sh500,000 by a Magistrate’s Court in Malindi after being found guilty of the offence.

Mr Joseph Charo Dzombo was convicted after being found guilty of attempting to bribe a police officer with Sh2,000 to secure the release of a friend who had been arrested in possession of 200 rolls of cannabis sativa.
