Consumer lobby faults construction of city’s tallest building

The Consumer Federation of Kenya has criticised Nairobi City County government for hurriedly approving construction of the tallest building without following the law.

Cofek secretary-general Stephen Mutoro said although the proposed 43-storey Avic International Africa headquarters and an adjacent 35-storey hotel tower on Chiromo Lane, Westlands, are key investments, their approval had not taken public interest into consideration.

He said Avic International Real Estate Kenya Ltd received permits without any evidence that it had complied with all the security and environmental requirements.

He said the speedy amalgamation of plots, including public roads by the Nairobi City County, raises fundamental questions and is an affront on the Bill of Rights.

Cofek asked Cabinet Secretaries in-charge of Land, Environment and Interior to urgently review the building approvals.
