Husband of former news anchor still at large, police

Police are yet to arrest a Congolese national accused of conspiring to defraud a Nigerian businessman.

Police officers investigating the case said their efforts to arrest Hypolite Nyogbia, husband of former KTN and K24 news anchor Ann Ngugi, have not yielded any fruits so far.

Mr Nyogbia is wanted in court in a case where the Nigerian businessman Fabian Chibiebule Ohare and his two associates were defrauded of USD 73,460 (Sh6,354,290).

He is alleged to have conspired with others, including his wife Ann Ngugi and another Congolese national Kamimbaya Soumaili, to fraudulently obtain the money on diverse days between in September 20th and October 24th last year in Nairobi and Kinshasa.

The former news anchor was in court on Tuesday for the mention of the case against her which has been consolidated with that of other accomplice Mr. Soumaili.

Both cases will be heard on May 3o before Senior Principal Magistrate Timothy Okello.

Detectives investigating the matter and who sought anonymity because they are not allowed to speak to the press said they suspect Mr Nyogbia has moved houses to evade police after learning he is wanted in court.

“There has been conflicting reports about his (Mr. Nyogbia’s) whereabouts from his friends. While some say he has fled to Uganda; others say he escaped to Tanzania or Kinshasa,” the officer said.

Nairobi Flying Squad officers say the victim of the fraud Mr Ohare has maintained that the man is still in the country, although he has not yet located his whereabouts.

The police officers declined to give an indication of how long the investigations will take. They said “any information on this matter can jeopardize the ongoing investigations”.

Mr. Ohare will be appearing before the detectives on Friday for questioning on the source of his huge amounts of money.
