How Kenyan athletes shared Rio moments on social media
Team Kenya athletes participating in the ongoing Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro are increasingly sharing their experiences with fans through social media.
They have kept their fans abreast, posting the dramatic moments of victory, or embarrassing incidents, in real time and fans have been checking the athletes’ updated on their social media posts.
Their most preferred social media platform is Twitter.
Kenyans were, for instance, not happy after Kenyan rugby sevens team was bundled out in the first round of the Olympics and blasted Collins Injera (@cinjera) and his team for going there “to have fun and take selfies”.
This was after he posted a picture on his Instagram page with 100 meters champion Usain Bolt.

After becoming the first person to defend his Olympic gold, David Rudisha (@rudishadavid) shared a picture of himself wishing his coach a happy birthday, “And before the day ends i would like to wish my coach Bro, Colm a Happy Birthday!!!! As we celebrate this great day!”

The first ever Kenyan woman to win an Olympic gold medal Jemima Sumgong (@JemimaSumgong) also took to social media to thank everyone and posted a picture with Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto who was then visiting Brazil.

Javelin champion Julius Yego (@JuliusYegoKE), who had issues with his travel ticket, seemed to have settled well after he reached Rio according to some of the pictures he shared on his Facebook page with fellow Kenya athletes.
The women’s 1,500 gold medalist Faith Kipyegon, whose elegant-looking picture went viral on social media, has also joined the bandwagon.

The one person who got the worst on social media was Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario (@AreroWario), who reportedly included his personal bodyguard in his entourage to the Rio Olympics despite athletes missing air tickets.

To make matters worse, the bodyguard bragged of how he was enjoying Rio captioning a few pictures he had taken, “Opening ceremony, when others are suffocating inside, I enjoy outside.”
