How hotel customers busted ‘rapist doctor’ Mugo wa Wairimu in Limuru
A ‘gynaecologist’ linked to a video showing a “doctor” raping an unconscious patient was on Thursday arrested by Administration Police officers in Limuru, Kiambu County.
Mugo wa Wairimu was apprehended at Gitungo Hotel, a popular eatery, where he was having lunch at around noon after wananchi informed the police of his whereabouts.
Two witnesses, Mr Eliud Gitari and Mr Peter Njoroge — who were also in the eatery — noticed Mugo and immediately notified the local Administration Police Commandant, Mr Michael Ndegwa.
Mugo was dressed in a khaki suit, a jungle green cap and sunglasses to cover his eyes. He was enjoying a meal of chapati and vegetables when he was arrested.
Mr Gitari said he became suspicious and after some time, realised the patron was the same person he had watched on television having been linked to a video showing a “doctor” raping an unconscious patient.
He informed his friend, Mr Njoroge, who in turn used his phone to take seven pictures of the suspect.
“I kept looking at him and compared his face with a photo which I had in my phone. I was sure it was him,” Mr Gitari said.
Concerned that the public would lynch Mugo if they got wind of his whereabouts, Mr Njoroge left the eatery and called Mr Ndegwa.
Mr George Nyoike, a waiter at the eatery, said Mr Mugo kept his face well hidden even when he was placing his order.
“He came in like an ordinary customer. When he sat down, I went to him to take his order but even when placing his order, he kept his gaze on the table and never looked up even once. I did not suspect anything until the police arrived,” Mr Nyoike said.
He said Mugo spent about an hour in the eatery and appeared not to be in a hurry.
The eatery management denied that Mugo had been holed up there since Monday.
Administration Police Commandant, Mr Michael Ndegwa said after arresting the suspect, they asked him for his identification. They also asked him whether he was the one accused of sedating and raping patients at his hospital and he answered in the affirmative.
“He did not resist the arrest,” Mr Ndegwa said.
A video allegedly showing the “doctor” raping a sedated patient at the Prestige Health Care clinic in Githurai 44, Nairobi, sparked widespread condemnation and outrage when it was first aired by Citizen TV on Sunday night.
Doctors this week said he was not registered with their board while the Nairobi County government said his hospital was not registered.
Wananchi have all this week been questioning why the police were yet to apprehend the suspect yet his Twitter account remained active.
The video sparked uproar after being recorded using a hidden camera by a man who said he was employed at the clinic and had over time become suspicious of Mugo’s behaviour.
Prestige Health Care clinic targets mainly women seeking gynaecology services and the report claimed that some of the patients had been raped after being given sedatives to swallow.
CROWD AT POLICE STATION
After word went round that he had been arrested and taken to a local police station, wananchi started streaming into the station. Some threatened to lynch him.
He remained in an office for about two hours until he was transferred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Keriako Tobiko, directed the police to complete investigations and give him the case file.
After being arrested, Mugo tweeted that he was in “the hands of Tigoni police” and threatened to sue Citizen TV.
