How fraudsters swindled Sh2 million via M-Pesa using Tuju’s name
A new trend of fraudsters evoking the names of high profile politicians to swindle money from the unsuspecting public has emerged
Former cabinet minister Raphael Tuju is the latest politician whose name has been used to fraudulently solicit money from the public .
Mr Tuju wrote telecommunications giant Safaricom last week to notify them of the scheme.
In his letter, Mr Tuju claimed that the owners of mobile phone numbers 0722 930 649, 0787 548 123 and 0728 512 540 have attempted or managed to swindle upto Sh2 million from the public on the premise that they are his relatives.
The politician also sensationally suggested that the scheme could involve Safaricom agents or employees.
The letter is addressed to Safaricom chief executive Bob Collymore.
“Safaricom has registered more numbers under the name Raphael Tuju with other ID card numbers, which makes it obvious that the cartel involved includes staff or agents of Safaricom,” said Mr Tuju.
He added: ” One victim lost Sh 120,000 to another fake line belonging to one Joyce Omamo who masqueraded as my sister,”.
Besides the mobile money transfers, the fraudsters are also using the social media – through the parody accounts – to swindle from the public.
