How City Hall awarded Sh48.9m contracts for ‘Kidero grass’

City Hall awarded contractors tenders worth sh48.9 million to spruce up the city in the run-up to the visit by US President Barack Obama in July.

The tenders were awarded to seven contractors who were each apportioned sections of major highways that were to be used by President Obama’s motorcade.

Details of the contracts were tabled at the county assembly last week after California MCA Hashim Kamau  had inquired on whether the tenders for the beautification had been formally awarded and whether the money used had been factored in the budget.

The response, tabled through the committee on Agriculture,Environment and Natural Resources, said the contracts were awarded through a restricted tender.

“Intensive landscaping works along Uhuru Highway-Mombasa Road transport corridor stretching from Museum Hill interchange to Popo road junction had been subdivided into seven lots and each had been tendered out to individual contractor,” stated the chairman of the committee Benson Amutavi.

Primescapes Limited was paid sh5.5 million, Mysticah Designs and Associate received sh6.6 million, while Prolak Designs and associates received sh5.8 million.

Others were Mugumo Arboretum company (sh6.8 million) ,LanCad Landscapes (sh6.8 million), Urban Green Landscapes (sh4 million), Swan Choice Enterprise (sh.7.4 million).

Mr Amutavi told the assembly that the budget had been factored in the 2014/2015 financial year budget and that the national government chipped in to share the cost.

“The national government was to contribute sh28.9 million, while the Nairobi City County would contribute sh20 million as the cost also included other construction works such as repair of roads and other landscaping activities geared towards beautification of the county,”said Mr Amutavi.
