Joy as woman is rescued from Huruma rubble six days on – Video

A woman has been found alive inside the rubble of the Huruma building that collapsed six days ago.

Doctors worked round to stabilize her as the Kenya Defence Forces created access routes to where she was.

Just over four hours later, National Disaster Management Unit Incident Commander Pius Masai said the female adult, who was still communicating, was accessed without any injuries.

She later taken to Kenyatta National Hospital.

Earlier on, Masai, had told reporters that the woman was weak and was being attended to by doctors who had entered the rubble. “We have administered oxygen,” said Masai.

At some point, rescuers stopped using bulldozers after the woman screamed and asked them to be careful as there was something next to her that could pierce her eyes.

Masai said the woman was in a place where she could not move, something that forced rescuers to look for alternative routes to get the her out.

Mr Maasai says police were ordered to clear traffic to KNH where the woman was taken.

The woman’s rescue increases the number of those who have been rescued to 137 with 70 people are still unaccounted for. The woman was discovered at 11.47am.

The building collapsed following heavy downpour in Nairobi last Friday. The death toll stood at 36 as of Thursday 3pm.
