Hope FM engineers messed up, says government

The Communications Authority of Kenya says popular Christian radio station Hope FM’S frequency interference was as a result of internal human error.

The Authority, through a statement posted on its Twitter handle, said that Hope FM staff switched off their studio transmitter link for maintenance but forgot to switch off the receiver in Limuru.

“This resulted in the STL receiver at Limuru to pick broadcasts from adjacent transmitters, feeding the same to Hope FM transmitter,” read the statement in part.

CA added that the Islamic prayers listeners could hear on Hope FM was signal from adjacent transmitters.

“Some of the adjacent transmitters to Hope FM include IQRA FM whose broadcasts filtered through to the transmitters of Hope FM,” stated the Authority.

INTERFERENCE

Hope FM listeners on Tuesday night had taken to social media speculating take-over by Islamists.

The station through its Facebook page only commented on the matter after the station returned on air thanking listeners for their concern following what it termed as ‘interference’ stating that it would get to the bottom of the matter.

In March 2006, eight unidentified gunmen shot and killed a security guard, wounded two others and torched part of Hope FM’s building during a broadcast that was comparing teachings of the bible with Islam’s Quran.

The attackers angrily shouted that the presenters had failed to take their phone calls.
