Homeless saint who warmed many hearts checks into rehab
Vincent Omondi, the homeless ‘saint’ who warmed the hearts of many Kenyans for his honesty, has finally checked into a rehabilitation center, a family member has confirmed.
Omondi’s sister Beryl on Thursday told Nairobi News on phone that her brother had been taken to an undisclosed rehabilitation centre.
“He is now at the rehab which I cannot reveal for now,” said Beryl.
Mr Omondi’s case was highlighted on Facebook after a user narrated how he returned Sh200, 000 to the owner after the bundles of cash fell out of the bag in the CBD.
Kenyans then went on a hunt for Mr Omondi, a move that made him to hibernate from the streets the whole of Wednesday.
On Thursday, though, photos of a clean and neatly dresses Mr Omondi emerged and his sister Beryl confirmed that indeed he had started his recovery journey.
DRUG ADDICTION
The sister, however, declined to reveal circumstances that led to her brother’s drug addiction.
But a source close to the family said Mr Omondi may have been depressed after his mother succumbed to cancer in 2008.
At the time, the family lived in Komarock and after the father remarried and relocated to the village, the children were left to fend for themselves.
According to the source, the two younger siblings, Beryl and her sister, started living with relatives while Mr Omondi, the eldest, looked for an IT job.
He landed a job at a supermarket but his depression led to drug addiction and eventual job loss.
Three campaigns to raise funds are currently running online spearheaded by different Facebook groups admins and Mr Omondi’s sister said she would confirm the account through which Kenyans can assist bring her brother back to his feet.
