Hawker pleads guilty to stealing police officer’s uniforms and handcuffs

A 19-year-old hawker who stole a police officer’s uniforms, handcuffs and cash at a public toilet in downtown Nairobi is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to theft charges.

Johnston Ondemo admitted to charges of stealing a bag containing a jacket, a trouser and a t-shirt from police constable Moureen Osumba of Inland Container Depot – ICD police station on January 11, 2020.

He also stole a pair of National Police Service handcuffs, Osumba’s certificate of appointment, a whistle, a pair of police uniform (white blouse and blue trouser) NHIF and ID cards, and cash Sh 3,500 all valued at Sh 14,750.

Osumba had alighted at Railways Station on her way from work at around 5am.

Then she decided to walk into the Home and Away Building Mfangano Street near bus station for a short call and deposited her bag with security guards.

When she returned she found the bag missing.

The suspect was eventually arrested but the items were never recovered.
