Devani’s gun drama case pushed

A city businessman facing a charge of going to a public while armed with a firearm will now take a plea on January 14 after failing to show up in court.

Mr Raj Devani, the court heard, is ill and could not attend court to plead to the charge against him.

Lawyer Robinson Kigen told senior principal magistrate Ms Elena Nderitu that his client was not feeling well and is out on police bond.

Prosecution counsel Mary Wang’ele did not oppose the application by the defence to have the plea deferred.

The magistrate allowed the defence application and directed the case to be mentioned on January 14 where Mr Devani is expected to plead to the charge.

Mr Devani allegedly without lawful occasion or excuse went armed with a pistol loaded with ammunition in a public place, Shimmers Plaza, in such a manner as to cause terror to members of the public.

The offence is alleged to have been committed on January 6 this year in Westland’s area, Nairobi.

Mr Devani is embroiled in an ownership dispute of the building with National bank.

Cape Suppliers, who bought the building from National Bank in November 2013 for a reported Sh400 million, released a statement on Monday accusing Mr Devani of attempting to shoot a guard and missing narrowly. The shot then hit the door.
