Govt working on online booking site for Madaraka Express

The government is working on an online booking site that will see more than 1,260 passengers travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa and back by Madaraka Express enjoy faster and reliable booking.

For now, passengers can only book a ticket from SGR’s ticketing offices at the Nairobi or Mombasa termini and pay in cash.

“We are working on an online booking site. It should be up this week,” State House director of digital communication Dennis Itumbi said.

He said once the site is complete, passengers will make payments via M-Pesa and the code generated will enable them to book the seats they want.

ABLE TO CHOOSE

Passengers will also be able to choose through the site whether they want to be in first class or economy class and when they want to travel.

The Madaraka Express train service between Nairobi and Mombasa is currently operational with one train leaving Mombasa and another Nairobi.

Passengers get free bus rides from Nairobi Central Railway Station on Haile Selassie Avenue to the Nairobi SGR Terminus and from Mombasa Railway Station on Mijikenda Street to the Mombasa SGR Terminus in Miritini.

The train has a capacity of 1,260 passengers including 118 passengers in each of the Economy Class coaches, 72 travellers in each of the First Class cars and 34 in the Premier Business Coaches.
