Government to spare 12 condemned buildings in Huruma

The government has declared it will not demolish 12 of the 70 buildings that were found to be unsafe in Huruma.

Public Works Principal Secretary Paul Mwangi said on Tuesday that the 12 houses, though structurally unsound, are deemed to be “salvageable.”

He made the announcement following a meeting of stakeholders held at National Youth Service headquarters in Ruaraka.

The meeting was attended by representatives from National Environmental Management Agency (Nema), National Construction Authority, National Buildings Inspectorate, the Architectural Association of Kenya and the Nairobi County government.

The meeting was held in response to the collapse of a six-storey building in Huruma over a week ago following heavy rainfall.

At least 40 people died in the tragedy, with 135 others rescued from the rubble of the residential block.

Nairobi Planning and lands executive Christopher Khaemba on Monday said City Hall would next week resume demolition of all houses marked as faulty.
