Government denounces Uhuru’s Abuja list

The government has dismissed the bloated list of 84 people who were scheduled to accompany President Uhuru Kenyatta to Abuja, Nigeria as fake.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho said the list included foreigners.

“As a ministry that is responsible for this, obviously, we question the legitimacy of this and we wish not to be drawn into it,” he said.

“I would expect that we act responsibly before we publish lists of these kinds… We don’t have Kenyans going by the names like Chinedu, Odili, Lawal… that we would be wanting to take to Nigeria.”

The list included staff from the Kenya High Commission in Nigeria. Embassies usually hire locals to perform various tasks.

President Kenyatta has since cancelled the trip and instead sent his deputy William Ruto, who was accompanied by a team of seven staff.

An advance team that had travelled to Abuja to prepare for Mr Kenyatta’s visit has also been recalled.
