Gor Mahia striker Kagere scoops September awards

Gor Mahia striker Meddie Kagere has emerged September’s outright best player in the SportPesa Premier League after taking home two awards in a space of just two days.

The Ugandan-born Rwandese was on Thursday voted the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) Fans Player of the Month having been voted the SJAK-SportPesa Player of the Month 48 hours earlier.

Kagere amassed 1689 votes in a ten-day poll conducted on soka.co.ke to cart away the fans’ award ahead of AFC Leopards Lamine Diallo (431 votes), Nakuru All Stars youngster Boniface Akenga (118 votes), Ulinzi Stars custodian Francis Ochieng (59 votes) and Chemelil Sugar FC striker Meshack Karani (39 votes).

In the SJAK-SportPesa – a poll which is conducted by panelists drawn from Sports Journalists Association of Kenya – Kagere polled 15 votes to beat other nominees Ebrimah Sanney of Nairobi City Stars (8 votes) and Meschack Karani of Chemelil Sugar who had 7 votes.

HARD WORKER

The soft-spoken player thanked his teammates and the fans who participated in the vote, pointing out that he wasn’t expecting to win the award since he’s a foreign player.

“I thank God for this award though I wasn’t really hoping to win it. As a foreign player you have to work harder and that is what I have been doing,” Kagere said shortly after being presented with the fans’ award.

“I’m a very ambitious man and I always focus on the future. Better things are on the way for me. I joined Gor Mahia from a European team because I wanted to learn more. The Kenyan league is very tough and physical.”

Kagere is fifth recipient of the fans’ following in the footsteps of Paul Kiongera, Jacob Keli, Victor Ali Abondo and Bernard Mangoli having won it in the past.
