Gor Mahia manage slim win over CNaPS
Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia on Saturday began their Caf Champions League campaign on a positive note by edging out CNaPS of Madagascar by a solitary goal at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Gor Mahia benefited from a penalty in the first minute of the match which was converted by returnee Ali Abondo.
K’Ogalo went into the offensive right from kick off and new comer Michael Olunga had the ball in good position inside the box when goalkeeper Randrianasolo upended him resulting into the penalty.
Olunga was a source of trouble for the Madagascan defense in the early exchanges and caused panic among the visitors in the ninth minute with a dangerously floated corner which the alert keeper punched out for another corner.
He was at it again seven minutes later when he got to the end of Jerry Santos’ cross but his shot was deflected out by the keeper’s boots.
Timothy Otieno also came close in the 24th minute when he received a ball inside the box and did well to dodge two challenges before unleashing a thunderous shot which unfortunately came off the woodwork.
Gor Mahia’s goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch was largely untested until the 27th minute when he was called upon to deal with Nono Vombola’s effort.
The visitors came into the match with more vigor in the second half and Simouri almost levelled the scores with a brilliant shot in the 57th minute, but his effort was cleared by Kevin Oluoch.
Timothy Otieno was rested for striker George Odhiambo who almost put the ball in the net with his first touch in the 64th minutes, but he was caught offside.
CNaPS pushed on with their characteristic short passes but their lone striker Nono Vombola missed a glorious one-on-one chance with the keeper ten minutes to time.
In time added on, Godfrey Walusimbi and Odhiambo engage in a lovely one-two but nothing came out of the move.
