Gor defender Owino listed in Zesco’s squad

David “Calabar” Owino was last evening named in Zesco United provisional squad ahead of the new football season, fuelling speculation the player was dumping Gor Mahia for the Zambian outfit.

“Our new players (include) Nigerian Ayo Ouluwafemi a defender formerly of Pretoria University in South Africa, and David Odhiambo a defender from Gor Mahia in Kenya,” the reigning Zambia league champions announced on Twitter.

Owino’s future with the Kenyan Premier League champions has been up for speculation in the recent past owing to impressive performances he has churned out both for his club and the national team over the past three seasons, since joining K’Ogalo from Karuturi Sports.

If and when this deal is made official, the 26-year-old is set to become the first Kenyan to feature in the Zambian league.

In the past month alone, the central defender, who can also fill in at right back, has received offers from Gor Mahia’s arch rivals AFC Leopards, Tanzanian club Simba SC and South Africa’s Ajax Cape Town.

Owino reportedly has only six months remaining on his current contract at Gor Mahia.

Both the player and K’Ogalo officials declined to comment on the subject but a majority of the club supporters on social media seem to have been resigned to his departure.

“It seems Calabar has made up his mind and the best option is to let him go. Wishing him all the best” Stephen Otieno Odongo posted on the official Gor Mahia Facebook page.

Owino rose to the limelight in March last year, following a man of the match performance for Harambee Stars during a World Cup qualifier away to out going African champions Nigeria in Calabar which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Gor Mahia have lost several key players since winning the league last season.
