Gor beat Sony to stay unbeaten
Reigning Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia maintained their unbeaten run in the league by beating Sony Sugar 1-0 at a waterlogged Awendo Green Stadium ON Wednesday.
The all important goal was scored by Ali Abondo in the 57th minute through a free kick after Innocent Wafula was brought down by Amos Asembeka who also shown a yellow card by centre referee Moses Osano.
The victory triggered wild celebrations by Gor Mahia fans who caused a traffic snarl up along Rongo-Migori road.
Hundreds of fans that braved the heavy downpour escorted the bus carrying Gor Mahia players to Awendo Hotel where a party awaited them.
A joyous Gor coach Frank Nuttall praised his players for mastering the slippery pitch.
“Although we missed several chances, the boys were fantastic. Our focus now shifts to the weekend game against Western Stima in Kisumu,” Nuttal said during the post-match interview.
On his part Sony coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno blamed the defeat on the weather.
“My boys played according to instructions but were only let down by the condition of the pitch,” he said.
PILED PRESSURE
Gor Mahia’s Michael Olunga was unlucky to see three of his efforts coming off the woodwork.
Sony’s best chance of the game came in the 61st minute through Alfred Onyango’s free kick which was however blocked by Gor Mahia’s defence.
Gor started the match on a high note with Olunga hitting the wood work in under a minute after receiving a pass from Kagere Meddie.
The visitors continued to pile pressure but were forced to slow down as the heavens opened.
The first half ended scoreless with Sony coach Otieno making two changes on resumption.
The changes however paid no dividends as Gor’s midfielder Khalid Aucho cut off all passes from Sony players.
Otieno would later introduce veteran Marwa Chamberi who however had a rude welcome as he was shortly booked for a rough tackle on Gor’s skipper, Musa Mohammed.
A total of three Sony players including Andrew Ssekayomba were shown yellow cards with Harun Shakava of Gor Mahia also being booked.
