Githurai women seek to clear ‘rape caves’ in forest

Residents of Githurai 44, Nairobi, are seeking permission to clear bushes in Ngomongo on the Northern Bypass, where women and girls have frequently been raped.

Some women from Ngomongo, Kiamumbi, Githurai 44 and Maziwa said they had been raped by a gang of men that warned them against reporting to the police.

RECORDED VIDEOS

They told of their chilling experiences at the hands of the criminals, who not only raped them, but also stripped them naked, tied them up, recorded videos and took photos.

One of four women who were raped last Sunday said she was walking with her boyfriend near Jacaranda Gardens at 4pm when four men approached them.

“They told us to accompany them into the bush. They threatened to kill us if we resisted,” she said.

She said they were taken into a cave, where there were five other men. They tied my boyfriend’s hands and mouth, she added.

IDENTIFICATION PARADE

The woman said the men took turns to rape her while one of them recorded videos and took photos during the ordeal that lasted three hours.

Five suspects aged between 22 and 35 were arrested after an eight-hour search.

On Sunday, the woman and the other victims were at the Kiamumbi Police Station where an identification parade took place.

“Several rape cases have occurred in this area. It is also used by carjackers. Bodies are also dumped here,” said Mr David Githumbi, a resident.

Police are still looking for the other members of the gang, including one with dreadlocks, believed to be the leader.
