Getting married. Which is the best contraceptive for us?

Q&A with Frida Njogu

Dear doc,

I am about to get married, and I am wondering what would be the best contraceptive methods for us. We don’t want to have children for the first three years.

Congratulations! It is good to plan early to avoid the last-minute rush, and to ensure you get the right contraceptive method.

There are many family planning options available, including the pill, the hormonal injection, the implant and intra-uterine contraceptive device (IUCD, popularly called the coil). Condoms too are an option.

I would. in your case, recommend the pill, particularly low hormone pills (your doctor can assess you and advise on the best one after a physical check-up). These are easy to use, and once you stop, you become fertile again within days.

Being low in hormone levels, they are likely to have few side effects, though this may vary from person to person. The second option would be the hormonal implant.
