Kerosene and petrol costs to rise

September 16th, 2013 1 min read

Nairobi residents will now pay more to fill up their cars and for bus fare after the energy regulator increased the price of fuel.

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) increased the price of kerosene, diesel and petrol, further punishing consumers already grappling with increased food prices after the government slapped a 16 per cent Value Added Tax on all goods.

Low income earners

Consumers who rely on kerosene for cooking and lighting, mainly low income earners, will have to fork out Sh1.63 more for a litre which will retail at Sh85.56.

Motorists have been forced to buy petrol at further Sh1.62 petrol for a litre and Sh105.55 for a litre of diesel, an increase of Sh1.11.

Nairobi motorists have had to pay more for parking space with the newly introduced daily charge of Sh300 up from Sh120 previously.

The increase in fuel prices might also end up hurting commuters as matatus usually pass on the increase in overheads to their passengers.
