Garissa attack survivor out of hospital after 28 surgeries

A student who survived Garissa University College terrorist attack has been discharged from a military hospital after six months of treatment.

Twenty-year-old Ms Anastacia Mikwa underwent 28 surgeries at the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital in Nairobi to help her walk again.

The first year Education student was among those who survived after Al-Shabaab terrorists raided the varsity, killing 142 of her college mates on April 2.

“She sustained multiple gun shot injuries in both of her thighs. The bones were completely shattered. Besides surgery, she has undergone counselling and nutrition treatments, ” said her doctor Colonel Dr James Mwika.

Ms Mikwa walked out of the military hospital on Tuesday with the aid of crutches but she is expected to walk on her own after two months.

“Am very happy and excited that I have been discharged. I hope to rejoin my classmates at Moi University and finish my studies.

“I thank God and the doctors here because I thought I would never walk again. It was a terrible moment that I don’t want to remember. I have forgiven those who caused this suffering, ” she said.
