Frustration forces Shani off the court

National women’s basketball captain Silalei Shani -Owuor has quit the sport due to frustration and mismanagement.

She claimed Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) was taking advantage of players.

“There is no motivation for one to continue playing because of the insensitive officials who don’t care about the development of the sport,” said Shani.

The women’s team took part in the Afro Basketball Competition in Maputo, Mozambique last year but is yet to receive their allowances five months down the line.

She wants to know why the federation was dragging its feet.

Wrote letter

“I wrote a letter to the chairman on behalf of my fellow players, asking for information on the position of the allowances but to date nothing has happened,” said Shani.

“Besides allowances, we neither have kits nor shoes for the national team. No one has motivation to play for Kenya because it is now an embarrassment instead of being a patriotic thing,” she said.

KBF treasurer Peter Orero had earlier said that the national team players are not entitled to any allowances and are usually informed when they are called up.

Silalei, who was also a member of Eagle Wings, captained the team victory during the Zone V African Basketball Championship in Kampala last year.

But Orero said an annual general meeting had agreed to pay the team Sh10,000.
