Five in court for rerouting Kenya Power line in Umoja estate

Five people were arraigned in Milimani court Monday morning after they were caught illegally rerouting a power line at Mutindwa area in Nairobi’s Umoja Estate.

The suspects – Francis Kamau, George Owuor, Hesborn Orimbo and Lawrence Odinga and George Ngugi – were nabbed by Kenya Power’s security team at the weekend while rerouting an existing line to allow for the construction of a high-rise building.

Milimani Chief Magistrate, Lucy Mbugua, gave the suspects an option of paying Sh50,000 bond or remain in custody after deferring the case until Tuesday when their pleas will be taken.

According to Kenya Power Manager Security services Fredrick Ledelea the five masqueraded as company employees and were found in possession of electricity cables, a pair of climbing irons, safety belts and a Kenya Power meter reading jacket among other items.

“Initial investigations reveal that the suspects were paid Sh40,000 by the owner of the building to redirect the power supply line from its original position. We are speedily investigating to establish how they acquired materials to do the job,” said Mr Ledelea.
