Fidel’s postmortem test fails to yield results

Pathologists on Tuesday failed to establish the cause of Fidel Odinga’s death, saying more tests needed to be done.

Family members waited for more than 10 hours before the team, led by government pathologist Dorothy Njeru and Prof Emily Rogena for the family, emerged to announce their findings.

Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor, Senator James Orengo and Fidel’s uncle Oburu Oginga witnessed the autopsy.

“We have done body examination and dissection and have not come up with a conclusive cause of death,” said Dr Njeru.

“We have agreed to proceed to laboratory examination. The analysis begins right away.”

Meanwhile, Fidel’s family and friends on Tuesday said before he died, he was being prepared for a political role. His mother, Ida Odinga, said Fidel had a bright future.

RECEIVING GUESTS

Mrs Odinga spent the better part of the day at home receiving guests, including First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and Mrs Rachel Ruto, the wife of Deputy President William Ruto.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero said Fidel had a vision for the youth.

“He had no ethnic, social or racial boundaries. He would have built the Kenya we want,” said Dr Kidero.

They spoke as leaders and mourners continued to throng the family home in Karen.

Fidel’s younger brother Raila Odinga Jr said he was a protective and unifying figure.

“He was a brother anyone would wish to have and was concerned with what I was doing,” he said.

Family Spokesman Joe Ager said the young Odinga interacted with everyone, regardless of background.

UDF leader Musalia Mudavadi said Fidel’s death was a devastating blow to the Odingas and the country.

The burial is slated for Saturday at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi shrine. Mr Ager said there would be two services; one at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, and the other at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Kisumu.

“We will give the public a chance to view the body but we appeal to the youth to be peaceful,” said Mr Ager.

The public in Nairobi will be allowed to view the body at Lee Funeral Home between 2pm and 4pm today. A meeting of friends and relatives will be held at the family home in Karen.
