Family mourns their three children who drowned in a farm pond

A family in Kitui County is mourning the death of three children who drowned in a farm pond during play time.

The three children, aged between two and four years, were playing hide and seek game at their home in Nzauni location, in Migwani district, when they strayed into a farm adjacent to their compound, which has a shallow pond.

Their parents got alarmed when the toddlers failed to turn up back home for some hours prompting a search that led to the discovery of their bodies floating in a nearby shallow pond.

According to the Officer Commanding Police Division in Migwani Julius Muu, it appears the children did not know the depth of the pond and were too young to save themselves.

“We’ve retrieved the three bodies and taken them to Migwani hospital mortuary,” Mr Muu said on Friday, adding that preliminary investigations did not establish any foul play.

The OCPD said they were called into the home by the area assistant chief on Thursday evening after the children’s bodies were discovered.

The children are Janet Kyalo aged four, her younger brother Mwendwa Kyalo aged two years and their cousin Purity Mwikali aged three years.

David Kyalo, the father of the two children and his sister were struggling to come to terms with the tragic incident.

The pond had been dry since January and harvested rain water only the day before when the long rains season started.
