Families spend night in cold after fire

More than 100 families spent their night out in the cold after a fire razed houses at a slum on Wednesday.

The fire at Mukuru Kaiyaba broke out at around 10.30am.

The slum chairman Vitalis Owino said the fire started in one of the houses after a woman left a burning stove and went out.

Apart from houses, several classrooms of a private school at the scene were not spared.

Evacuate

The principal of Amazing Grace Academy Mrs Penninah Kanini said residents helped teachers to evacuate 70 children.

“They helped us take the children to the St Veronicah Church compound at Mukuru- Kisii Village,” Mrs Kanini said.

Youths were quick to demolish other houses to prevent the fire from spreading.

Assistant chief Famau Ali and Industrial Area OCS Amos Shamala led security officers in preventing looting.
