EXCLUSIVE: Footballer Calabar gets a taste of good life in new flat

Kenyan defender David ‘Calabar’ Owino has finally been offered a flat by Zesco FC.

The Kenya International had been residing in a hotel since joining the Zambian league champions in a two year deal last January.

This is despite a contractual obligation binding the club to offer him a two bed-roomed flat for the duration of his contract.

CONFIRMED

The player’s representative George Bwana exclusively confirmed this development to Nairobi News on Monday morning.

“The four month delay (in moving) in to the house was occasioned by a delay in repairs to some of the units owned by the club’s parent company. The management explained this to me and so we had to be patient because they were paying all his hotel bills anyway.” Bwana explained.

Such services towards professional players in Kenya are non existent, in a competition where top flight clubs struggle to pay its players’ monthly salaries on time. Footballers in Kenya are averagely paid Sh45, 000 as monthly salary

“I am proud to have negotiated this deal for David. But if you look at his performances down there, he is worth much more.

“The problem with Kenyan football is the poor relationship between blue chip companies, who are supposed to sponsor football, and the game’s administrators,” Bwana, a former football administrator added.

The flat, according to Bwana is fully furnished and stocked with electronics such as a fridge, a television set and a DSTV premium bouquet, all of which the club pays for.

The Zambian champions, who are based in Ndola, the country’s second largest City, also offsets other utility bills incurred by Owino such as electricity and water, besides providing him with an unspecified amount as shopping voucher for food.

Owino is a constant with fixture at Harambee stars’ rear guard and has made an impressive start at his new club, scoring four goals in as many competitive matches to date.
