KU student accused of stabbing college sweetheart to be detained longer

A final year Kenyatta University student accused of stabbing his alleged lover from Pwani University will be detained at Kilifi police station for eight days as detectives conclude investigations.

Kilifi Senior Principal Magistrate Justus Kituku allowed an application by the prosecution seeking to detain the suspect for more days to carry out investigations, which extend to Bomet County, where both hail from.

Mr Nicholas Koech is alleged to have stabbed Ms Naomi Chepkemoi, a third-year student at Pwani University, in her house at Mkwajuni village on the outskirts of Kilifi town.

Investigating officer Evans Kiboi told the court that they needed more time to take the suspect to a psychiatrist and record statements from the victim, who is admitted at Kilifi County Referral Hospital.

RECORD STATEMENTS

He said he also needed to record statements from both the accused and the victim’s families because the suspect communicated with them before, and after stabbing Ms Chepkemboi.

“We also need time to extract phone communication of both the victim and the suspect,” he said. Mr Koech, who alleged that he had been living with the victim as husband and wife, asked the court to allow him to see his daughter.

“Before the case commences, I would like to be allowed to see my daughter and also my wife who is admitted at hospital,” he said. He further requested his parents and those of the victim to address their relationship wrangles, which he said had lasted for a long time.

Earlier, Mr Koech had blamed Ms Chepkemoi’s father for denying him his right to take care of his one-and-a-half year old baby, whom he sired with the victim.

Mr Koech, who seemed remorseful, told journalists that he acted out of love for his ‘wife’ and daughter.

“Naomi is my wife and I love her very much. We started dating back in 2016 while she was a first year,” he said. The case will be mentioned on April 23.
