Kenya to face Ethiopia in Cecafa opener


Hosts Kenya will face Ethiopia, Zanzibar and South Sudan in Pool A of the Council of East Africa Football Association (Cecafa) Senior Challenge that kicks-off on November 27.

According to the draw released Friday morning, Kenya will face Ethiopia in their opening fixture.

The hosts expect to advance to the knockout stages and will be counting on home advantage .

Harambee Stars reached the final last year in Uganda and lost 1-0 to the hosts. Stars last won the regional tournament 2002.

Defending champions Uganda are in Group ‘C’ alongside rivals Rwanda, Sudan and Eritrea, while Group ‘B’ comprises Tanzania, Somalia, Burundi and Zambia.

The Chipolopolo are the only guest team. Ivory Coast and Malawi turned down invitations to this year’s tournament.

Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium, Moi Kasarani, Mombasa and Machakos are some of the venues identified to host the competition.

Kisumu’s Moi Stadium faces a race against time to be ready in time to host the event.

This year’s event will coincide with the Kenya @50 celebrations that mark 50 years since the country attained independence.
