East Africans lose big in Mamas

East African musicians have lost big in the 2014 list of MTV Africa Music Awards.

The nominees list was announced on Wednesday night in Johannesburg, South Africa.

From Kenya, only Amani and Sauti Sol managed to get a nomination each.

Amani got a nod in the Best Collaboration in her song Kiboko Changu with Uganda’s Radio and Weasel, while Sauti Sol got a nod in the Best Group category.

From Tanzania, only Diamond made it to the nominees list in the Best Male and Best Collaboration categories. Uganda was worse hit because the only nomination they got was the Kiboko Changu collaboration in of Amani, Radio and Weasel.

This is the first time East Africa’s popular musicians are missing in the continental awards.

The only other nomination Kenya has clinched is the non-music personality of the year, where actress Lupita Nyong’o has been nominated against Nigeria’s author Chimamanda Adichie and actress Omotola Jalade, as well as Ivory Coast’s footballer Yaya Toure and South African comedian Trevor Noah.

Nigerians and South Africans bagged most of the nominations. The awards ceremony will be held on June 7, in Durban, South Africa.
