EACC officials arrest police boss and three others for taking bribes

Four policemen were Thursday seized in Meru by the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission officials for allegedly taking bribes.

An Officer Commanding Police Station (OCS), a corporal and two constables, all from a police station in outskirts of Meru Town, were said to have collected money from bars, boda boda and taxi operators.

EACC officials laid a trap for the officers before arresting them while they were in possession of Sh19, 850 and a list business premises they were targeting.

The arrested police officers have been transferred from Meru to the commission’s regional office in Isiolo for further interrogation.

Upper Eastern EACC boss Ignatius Wekesa confirmed the arrests, which came even as the anti-graft agency held a sensitization week in Isiolo County.

Mr Wekesa said the officers have been harassing locals for bribes.

The EACC boss said his office will conduct similar operations in Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, Marsabit, Meru and Samburu counties.

“Police officers are supposed to provide services like any other public servants. But the officers who we arrested have decided to swindle money from innocent citizens. We will not condone that,” said Mr Wekesa.

He put on notice any corrupt officers that they will face the law.

Mr Wekesa urged residents to report any suspicious activities to EACC office in Isiolo.
