Brace for a dusk to dawn ban on bodaboda, Kimaiyo

By NAIROBI NEWS February 26th, 2014 1 min read

Police Inspector General David Kimayio has promised a fresh crackdown on bodaboda, including enforcing a dusk to dawn ban, once news rules being developed are approved.

In a tweet on his official Twitter handle, the Inspector General said the Ministry of Transport is currently developing rules and regulations on the motor cycles.

The rules will set out which parts of the country the ban of bodaboda night operations will be enforced.

“Motorcycle operation is only allowed from 6.00am to 6.00pm. The law that’s being developed will clarify which parts of the country the law will apply on operation hours,” Mr Kimayio tweeted on Wednesday.

“Motor cycles rules and regulations are being developed through the parent ministry. Immediately they are out we shall enforce to the letter,” he added.

Bodabodas are handy to city residents keen on beating the massive traffic jams in the evenings. They are also considered cheaper compared to taxis.

On the flip side, there is an emerging trend of robbers using motorcycles to commit crimes in the city. Police say the robbers ride in pairs to masquerade as a boda boda operator with a customer.
