Driver arrested for killing passenger over Sh30 bus fare

Police in Ishiara market, Mbeere North, are holding a driver on suspicion that he killed his passenger by hitting him on the head with a club for failing to pay Sh30 fare.

The victim, Njeru Mbuko, died on the spot after the fatal blow at Kavugua shopping centre as he traveled home from Ishiara aboard the mini-lorry (commonly referred to as canter) on Wednesday mid-morning.

Iria Itune chief Fredrick Mbuva said the two argued over the fare when the deceased hesitated to pay, prompting the physical confrontation where the driver, only identified as Mr Kithinji, allegedly produced a club and hit him.

Mr Mbuva said police from Ishiara took the body to Embu Level Five hospital mortuary. The driver is being detained at the local police station.

He called on the government to set up a police post in the area, saying that three people had been killed in a recent spate of insecurity.

“Two women and a man were recently murdered before today’s killing. The trend of people being killed has increased in the recent past,” said Mr Mbuva.
