Why? Distraught Makau Mutua asks Martha Karua as Khalwale says ‘good riddance’

Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale and renowned columnist Makau Mutua have weighed in on the recent change of allegiance by former cabinet minister Martha Karua.

While Dr Khalwale did not see any loss for Cord, Prof Mutua was livid, almost to feeling that she had let down her guard by declaring that she will support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s reelection bid in 2017.

This is what Dr Khalwale had to say.

But she did not take the criticism lying down.

On his part, Prof Mutua could not believe that she was switching her allegiance from Cord and its leader Raila Odinga to President Kenyatta. “Why @MarthaKarua? Why? You’ve stood up for so long. Please don’t sit now. If you can’t win, lose with honor,” he tweeted.

He then followed with this tweet.

Ms Karua, famously referred to as the iron lady of Kenyan politics due to her principles, had associated with Cord in the fight against social injustices in the country.

She resigned from retired President Mwai Kibaki’s cabinet on April 2009 citing frustrations in her work as Justice Minister.

She vied against President Kenyatta in the 2013 lost general election and managed just 43,881 votes.

Earlier this week, she announced that she would shelve her presidential ambitions in 2017 and instead vie for governor’s seat in Kirinyaga, which is in the president’s backyard.
