Controversy over death of KMTC student in hotel swimming pool

Police in Murang’a South of Murang’a County are investigating the mysterious death of a student at Kenya Medical Training Institute, Thika campus who died in the swimming pool of a hotel.

The 21-year old student, who was in the company of his three colleagues, had gone to swimming expedition at Golden Palm Hotel when he drowned.

Confirming the incident Murang’a South DCIO David Cheruyoit told the Nation that police have launched investigations to establish whether the death of Joseph Mbugua was pre-determined or he drowned.

CAUSE OF DEATH

“We are at are conducting investigations to establish the cause of the death of the student who was in his third year at KMTC college,” the police boss said.

Detectives and the deceased’s family members however seem to be reading from a different script since the police say the deceased’s friends informed them that he did not know how to swim while the family maintains that their kin knew how to swim and had swam in different swimming pools.

The family has read foul play in the death of their kin saying he know how to swim and could not comprehend the manner in which he drowned in a swimming pool.

POSTMORTEM

The deceased’s uncle, Stephen Gathemba, said the family had requested for a repeat of the postmortem since they were not fully involved when the first autopsy was conducted.

“We are not satisfied with the results of the first autopsy report. That’s why we want it repeated, to know and understand how our kin drowned in a swimming pool yet he know how to swim,” Gathemba told the Nation.

The family has hired a private pathologist to witness the second autopsy which they say will inform them the next course of action.
