Dancehall & Reggae star Capleton granted Sh25 million bail over rape
Celebrated Jamaican reggae and dancehall musician Clifton Bailey popularly known as Capleton has been granted a cash bail of $250,000 (Sh25 million) over a rape charge.
Capleton, famed for hit songs such as That Day Will Come, Jah Jah City among others, was arrested and presented in court over sexual assault charges early this week.
The 51-year-old was ordered to submit his fingerprints for investigation after a complaint was filled against him for sexual offences and child abuse.
On Tuesday he appeared before St Andrews Parish court in Kingston, Jamaica to answer to the charges.
The parish judge Vaughn Smith ordered the accused not to have any contact with the complainant.
EXTORTION SCHEME
However, the judge turned down a request by the clerk of court, wanting the Rastafarian entertainer to surrender his travel documents as part of his bail conditions as the investigation proceeds thus allowing him to continue doing shows.
But after submissions judge Smith cautioned Capleton that he may be forced to do so if he misses even one court date.
Taking to his social media, the artiste denied the charges saying he has much respect for women and would not commit such crimes.
“I vehemently deny all accusations of sexual misconduct and do not condone crime or violence against women or anyone. I am a father with daughters that understands the responsibility of a role model and would never do anything to hurt anyone or jeopardize my career,” his post read in part.
Capleton went on to state that he was a victim of extortion.
“I’m the target of an extortion scheme and my lawyers and I presented evidence to authorities to fight this false accusation,” he added.
Through his lawyer, the singer has accused the investigating officer of failing to conduct proper investigations.
