County has highest rate of murder

You are more likely to be killed in Nairobi than in any other county. The county recorded the highest number of murder cases nationally this year.

According to the National Police Service Annual Crime Report released by Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo recently, Nairobi accounted for nine percent of all the 1,749 murders reported country wide.

Mr Kimaiyo said the biggest challenge in fighting crime in the city was the proliferation of small firearms and the rise in terror-related attacks.

“Despite the challenges, measures have been put in place to protect the country against the terror groups and other outlawed sects,” Mr Kimaiyo said during the release of the report.

The county’s crime index stood at 243 crimes per 100,000 persons; ranking at position nine among the ten regions with highest crime rates. Lamu had the highest crime index at 532 per every 100,000 persons.

Although the report indicated that crime rate had decreased country wide by 5,903 cases, Nairobi still lags behind in arresting criminals.

The report noted that crime rates in the months of May and November increased by 11 percent and 0.5 percent respectively.

Kimaiyo attributed the decrease to the deployment of more security officers, police collaboration with communities and improved performance by the men in blue.
