Crime rate dips in Dandora thanks to Sonko’s youth initiative

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko says crime rate has reduced in most parts of Dandora following the establishment of the Dandora Transformation League (DTL).

The initiative recruits youths for employment in the area.

Governor Sonko says DTL has recruited more than two hundred youths, some previously in criminal gangs.

Nairobi police Boss Philip Ndolo confirmed Nairobi News on phone on Tuesday that indeed crime rate in Dandora had decreased.

The Chief Executive Officer of DTL Charles Gachanga said since the initiative was introduced by Governor Mike Sonko, many youths have now become productive in the society.

“Previously we had a challenge of insecurity in this region because of youth unemployment and being idle. However, through Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, we have been able to mobilize the youth form the garbage collection groups, greening the area and other incoming generating activities,” said Gachanga.

Wilson Mutua, a father of two from Dandora Phase Five (V), said youth have embraced the emerging business and job opportunities in the area.

Mutua said once the construction of the multi-billion Dandora Recycling Plant is completed, majority of the youth in the area will be employed at the facility.

“We are now optimistic that after the completion of the construction of the Dandora recycling plant, majority of the youth here will get employment. We are appealing to Nairobi governor Mike Sonko to speed up the process of constructing this facility,” he said.
