Court orders Govt to remove Thika superhighway bumps within 60 days
The government has 60 days to remove bumps on Thika Superhighway, following a court order.
Justice George Odunga issued the directive on Tuesday following a successful petition filed by Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko.
Senator Sonko sued the county government in 2015 seeking to have bumps and rubbles at Survey and Homeland/Breweries areas removed so as to ease traffic jam.
The judge ruled that the bumps should be removed and that the task done at the cost of the Nairobi County government and the Transport ministry.
He also directed the county government and the ministry to ensure that pedestrians on that road use the already provided footbridges.
In September last year, the government advertised for designs of four footbridges to be erected on the busy highway.
In paid adverts in local dailies on Thursday, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced that the four footbridges would be set up at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies (KSMS), Garden City Mall, Witeithie and Mang’u.
These are the four sections where motorists have to endure huge traffic jams due to bumps which were put up to enable pedestrians cross the 12-lane road safely.
It is not clear whether or not the designs are complete and when construction work will commence.
