Court drama as mob bays for police officer’s blood in rape case

There was a drama outside Nyahururu law courts Thursday when a group of people attempted to lynch an administration police officer who had been charged with multiple counts of robbery and rape.

Court orderlies and security guards at the courts were forced to lock the irate mob of more than 100 people out of the court premises as police officers from Subukia police station whisked their colleague from the wrath of the public using another exit.

The group had arrived at the court premises early in the morning from Kabazi area in Nakuru County.

BUNGLED INVESTIGATION
They claimed police officers who were investigating the case had bungled the investigation against their colleague to save him.

“This police officer killed someone as he robbed him. The victim was robbed at gun point and we were expecting him to be charged with murder and not robbery with violence as the victim died after he was shot by the officer,” said one of the residents.

He said the residents felt that the charges preferred against him were too lenient.

Police Constable David Kimani Kuria had denied two counts of robbery with violence and rape when he appeared in court on August 2, 2016.

He was released on a Sh1 million bond and was in court for the mentioning of the case when the drama ensued.

The police constable had been charged that on the night of July 27, this year at Kabazi area in Nakuru County while armed with an AK–47 rifle, and in the company of others not before court, robbed a woman Sh 45,000 and a mobile phone worth Sh10,000 all property valued at Sh55,000.

In the second count, the officer attached to Bahati police post in Nakuru County, was charged that on the same day he robbed John Wanjohi a resident of Kabazi a mobile phone worth Sh7,000.

According to a statement by a witness who will later testify at the court, Mr Wanjohi would later succumbed to injuries he sustained during the robbery incident.

RAPED HIS VICTIM
The officer was also charged with raping the first complainant at their Kabazi home on the same day.

An alternative count had stated that the accused person indecently touched the complainant’s private parts without her consent.

The court had heard that the accused together with others not before the court stormed into the couple’s home where they robbed them at a gun point before raping the first complainant.

The case will be mentioned on August 22, this year.
